Government's 'Failure to Get to Grips With Housing Crisis in Offaly' Slammed

Updated: Sep 7, 2023

The most recent Residential Tenancies Board rent index report reveals things are going from bad to worse for renters in Offaly under Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.

That's according to Sinn Féin candidate for Tullamore in the upcoming local elections, Aoife Masterson

Ms Masterson said: "The RTB rent index report shows that things are going from bad to worse for Offaly renters under Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.

"This disaster is the legacy of this government and of twelve years of Fine Gael in power.

"Instead of cutting rents, under Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael rents are rocketing upwards, to levels that people on ordinary incomes in Offaly simply cannot afford.

"Since this Government took office average rents in Offaly have increased a staggering 27.9%, with an increase of over 9% in the last year alone. The average new rent in Offaly is now at over €963. It is clear this government is failing a whole generation.

"The impact on people across Offaly is devastating. We have entire generations locked out of home ownership, paying sky high rents while struggling to save for a deposit and fearing they'll never own their own home.

"The people of Offaly need change urgently. The bottom line is we need a government that will cut rents and build homes. Sinn Féin in Government would stand up for renters in Offaly to end the housing crisis by delivering genuinely affordable homes."
